Etiquette Rule #5: Pick Up After Yourself

Every Litter Bit Counts
Have you ever noticed that some passengers abandon all practice of cleanliness when they ride public transportation? Feeling no ownership of the property, they assume their buck fifty fare offers them permission to leave a buck fifty of waste behind. Apathetic litterbuggers probably don't think twice about how one piece of trash can add up to a collection of rubbish and how that heap breeds more problems than the germs it carries. Candy wrappers, crumpled papers, gum, and rolling bottles aren’t exactly considered someone else’s treasure. Dirty aesthetics aside, out of commission seats and ticker tape obstacle courses are the burden we inherit. If you see someone littering, hold back your judgment and politely offer up the wrapper with a "Here, I think you dropped this". If they don’t accept responsibility, be a good sport and dispose of it yourself at the next stop. Think of your wallet the next time you consider treating the train like a garbage disposal. The only thing that's going to be chewed up and spit out is a higher fare. Put the trash in the can, man!

Muni Manner: Don't rely on others to pick up after you, always dispose of your waste. It’s the safe and courteous thing to do.

Thank you for that!
Sunflower seed shells are the worst, in my opinion. People, think about it, it is like spitting on the ground but worse, it stays and stays and someone else has to sweep it up.

This is too funny, I love it! I think the rolling bottles are my number one dropped trash dislike. McDonald's bags are a close second.

Anyway, great idea. I'm happy to link!

P.S. Please think about posting these on the bus. Or maybe just "This isn't your house" stickers.

Telling people " here you dropped this" so they can pick it up is a good way to get beat up.

The line: "Yo Momma Don't Work Here" comes to mind.

Rolling bottles are my pet peeve!

I was riding the number 9 one morning and got to witness a man projectile vomiting on the seat next to him. Everyone around him got up and moved to the front of the bus because the smell was overbearing. And of course, the man proceeded to get up at the next stop and didn't think anything of the mess he was leaving behind. A number of passengers informed the driver of the mess on the seat, but he just continued on with his route. Hands down, this was one of the top five most disgusting things I had seen on MUNI.

I rarely take it upon myself to criticize other people in public, but one time on BART a couple was shelling pistachios and quite literally had created a small mound on the floor. I quite simply asked them to clean up his mess. He told me to fuck off.

I've also seen a full blown food fight on the 14.

We really need to start getting Singaporian on these people.

I used to take a soda with me on the way home on bart. I never spilled and made sure the cup left with me. If others would pick up after themselves then maybe good people like myself could have my evening soda. I am all for bart selling no spill bottles for just this reason. The money can go to clean the pee smell out of the seats.

on several occasions i've seen people drop their trash out of open muni windows onto the street. it's like two violations!

also, my former teacher once told me about a horrific late-night muni ride: she was sitting next to an empty seat that appeared to be pooled with water. however, she later realized the water was, in fact, blood, and promptly moved to the front of the bus.

There needs to be signs on every MUNI bus and train that says "Yo' Momma Don't Work Here, So Clean Up After Yourself". The biggest offenders of the trash rule tends to be high-school hoodrats and ghetto dwellers. They seem to think that if they leave it there, the trash will "magically" disappear because someone else gets paid to clean it up. The lack of common sense is what makes certain MUNI lines "rolling ghettos".
