Summer Lovin'To stay true to our "Etiquette in Action" segments, we Muni Ladies are finally hitting the road to...take some action! In the time since we launched our etiquette guide for the transit savvy, we've observed many instances of exemplary transit tact on our rides and we feel it's time for some positive reinforcement. That's why the Muni Ladies and their minions will take to the tunnels of public transportation in the month of August to give mild-mannered riders some lovin' for what we deem to be proper Muni Manners. So, if you remove rubbish someone else left behind on the train or tuck your tote to make room for a fellow rider, don't be surprised when you receive a spontaneous gift card as our way of saying thanks for boosting the state of civility on mass transit. Carry on!

A suggestion for an etiquette rule: People shouldn't block the exits if they're not getting off at the next stop. For instance, on the underground cars, when a person blocks an exit, only one column of people can exit. If the entrance wasn't block, two columns of people can exit, thus speeding up the exiting two-folds.
Effort is very good..... lets see how do you keep it up
Thanks for doing this on behalf of the comMUNIty! I hope at some point you'll address the common MUNI atrocity of fingernail clipping.
PET PEEVE:
Women putting on ALL of their make-up on the way to work ( I await
the emergency stop which will propel the mascara
wand through the eye and cause me to miss my destination...no pity ;-)) and combing hair
all over ( I have seen lice) AND PLEASE DO NOT SLATHER YOUR SCENTED
LOTION all over and then grab the pole and leave
the residual MESS. Purell is okay ;-). THANK YOU!!!
What a refreshing idea. It seems that common courtesy is going out the window these days. It's nice to see people doing something about it.
I hope you don't mind me adding a couple of pet peeves that I have with BART riders.
When waiting for a train on a narrow platform, please don't cluster together and block the walk - forcing passengers who want to get by to walk on the yellow strip. It is better to wait politely in a line along the opposite edge of the walkway.
Secondly, for those passengers who want to take the escalator up from an underground station, don't cut in front of everyone else waiting to get onto it. Take your place at the back of the line like everyone else.
haha your blog is too cute.
i kind of miss muni since where i live has no real public transit. but i don't miss the smell and the crowds.
Another suggestion is for individuals to remove their back-pack (from their back) when on a crowded train. As crowded as the trains can be during peak hours, having a back-pack in your face is not a good thing.
good......
What a fantastic idea, i really hope that you manage to give all the cards away.

What an awesome blog. Man, I love manners!
Cxx
Quite a great blog. Refreshing and unique :) Kudos.
oh my god, i can't believe it! i thought that i was the only one until i eventually had a co-worker to vent with. but a whole blog-fucking genius.
one of my biggest pet peeves on muni (or any public transportation for that matter)is pivoting. to clarify, if person "a" is sitting in the inside seat and wants to deboard, the it's totally rude for person "b" to just pivot their lower half outward so that person "a" out must climb over person "b" in that awkward manner in which all of our neuroses involving keeping one's personal sphere are compromised. even worse is when person "a" has a large load to carry. the polite thing to do is to get up our of your seat and allow person "a" to get up. i often feel compelled to just "accidentally" hit the person "b's" of this world with my backpack or groceries to teach them a lesson.
i'll make an exception-person "b" is old, pregnant, or that particular muni vehicle is packed like a sardine can. other than that-i swear, it's like some people were just born in a barn or something.
Cool
Why doesn't MUNI enforce the no eating/drinking rules. I get really nervous when I'm next to someone with a hot cup of coffee. I can't move away casue the bus is packed. I'm just hoping the bus doesnt make a quick stop so I sdon't get burned or my suit gets coffee spilled all over it. Even with the usage of a safety cup, there is still the possiblity of getting burned.
Cool idea - how about people start talking to each other more.
Actually that did happen to me in SF, when I visited.
I just hate it when I'm waiting in line at the outbound express bus and the driver opens the back door and the front door for boarding. At that point it is just a free-for-all. I have to ask, what the hell is the line for????
How about people who wear too much perfume and vice-versa. For example, when i take the 14 to go to the movies or hangout with friends, the bus is usually full of people who have way too much perfume on and people who have ummmm....odor problems haha. It makes you dizzy and such, it's one of the reasons why I just ride my skateboard to get around rather that taking the bus
There was once an excellent reader's digest article on how etiquette gets very confusing, the only thing that I can remember is a faux pas committed by the wrter in an Arab country;
He sat with on elg up, but since the feet are insulting in Islam, it resulted in a very emabarrasing situation for him.
Etiquettes are relative, aren't they?
What may be a good manner in one country, could be indecent behavior in another.....
And don't they bound your limitless energy and freedom. I know freedom has limits, and etiquettes set them, but who is to decide???/
GUILTY...but not.
Sorry, but I ride the MUNI all the time, and
I am an 'aisle sitter'. I do this because I have
been trapped by hoards, mobs, pink bags, can
scavenger collectors
and backpacks and be UNABLE to get up, nevermind make it
to an exit to get off.....so sorry ;-).
: )
Heard about you on the news and I love what you're doing. I, too, hope you'll be able to find enough "good stuff" to allow you to give away all your goodies. :-)
There are so many rude behaviors for you to take on, but I think you've made a great start. I hope you'll share some stories of the instances that inspire you to reward the polite people.
finally! someone who appreciates the apparently dying art of public transport courtesy!
although, the casual smile or nod at fellow commuters has left me stuck in completely awkward and random conversations.
but its also helped me know my regular bus drivers on a first name basis, which is handy because they always give me a free ride if i dont have enough change for a ticket!
Keep it up! We should get some people like you here too.. hehe
cool blog, keep it up !
FUN BLOG!!!!!! Congratulations on being named as a blogger of note this week!!
Love your blog! I just visited San Francisco last week for the first time and took #47 down Van Ness. We cannot rely on public transportation where I live, so finding this blog was quite ironic, and it will help me keep some fun memories fresh for awhile longer.
Congratulations on the Blog of Note add.
cute blog :-)
dear anonymous aisle sitter, if you read my comment closely, you will see that i have made over-crowded buses an acception to the rule along with the eldery and pregnant. it's those other everyday twats with a whole lot of room to get up and far less manners to do so.
sincerely,
anonymous annoyed exiter.
