Our moms taught us to be flattered when someone notices us, and they also taught us that it’s not polite to stare. Everyone partakes in a little gratuitous people-watching to help pass the time, and, granted, it can be hard to ignore certain commuter spectacles (ER #6). If you have a tendency to be a glare-aholic, consider keeping your eyes pointed in the direction of your lap or the floor. Feel free to look up and take it all in, but keep your eyes moving and never pause to lock in on any one passenger. Got busted mid-fix? Shoot over a kind smile before quickly averting your eyes. And if you simply know you can't resist the urge to ogle, be sure to hide behind undercover devices like a newspaper or your trusty sunglasses. If you happen to be someone’s eye pudding, it surely prompts paranoid thoughts but rest assured that the peeper most likely left their book at home or is cruising without their conversational compadre - so don’t take it personally. Let this be a reminder that classic pearls of wisdom from our moms still apply in modern day mass transit.
Muni Manner: To prevent fellow passengers from feeling uncomfortable, keep your stare in check. It’s the safe and courteous thing to do.

Yeah, not staring at the two individuals engaged in sexual activities on the 9 San Bruno on a weekday afternoon was a no brainer. A water gun might have been a better choice. Any thoughts?
I COMPLETELY agree with this rule. Just last night, I was riding the N and this guy who got on with me came and sat near me, then wouldn't stop staring. I was with somebody but I couldn't help noticing this guy who wouldn't stop staring at me, and it was really awkward and unnerving.
I just saw this website on the CBS news and just had to check it out. You're right about the staring rule. People who stare really bug me because you have no idea what they're thinking about. For that reason, it's even worse if you're a girl.
Last time someone stared at another person on the bus, words were said and a gun was pulled! I so don't want to be caught in the cross fire over something this dam stupid! Just mind your manners and don't stare! We are all freaks of nature - get used to it!
OH! YES! I love people watching and always bring sunglasses to wear on BART or the bus when I come into San Francisco!
My sisters and I have always said that you not only pay for a ride, but you also pay for the "show". The "show" is usually the cell phone talker or the person singing loudly (as mentioned in your other post).
I am definately adding this blog to my list and would love if you stopped by my blog, Walking the Grid, when you have some spare time on your hands!

When I keep my eyes moving too much than I start to look shifty.
haha
nice =)
agreed
Still, someone who is constantly shifting their gaze comes across as suspicious, or in the least worried about something.
Some stuff is just common sense
RULES for NO'SEE'UM:
ALWAYS wear the BLACKEST sunglasses.
ALWAYS wear earpods, even if no music to go with.
ALWAYS carry a book or reading material.
ALWAYS wear a scarf to cover your nose from
the stench or lol'ing about
'sex' on the San Bruno 9 ....I would probably have
not been able to refrain from mumbling:
"GET A ROOM"!
Staring bothers the heck outta me! When someone stares at me, I stare back (without blinking) to let them know how uncomfortable and rude it feels!
Agreed. (x 500).
When I was younger I would complain to my dad that people always stared at me... He told me that the other person may have been caught in their thought and I happened to just be in their direction when they were "spacing" and staring at me.
Nowadays, I play this "staring game" where when I am walking down the sidewalk from time to time[which is a daily thing here in warm Hawai`i] I casually stare at a person... mainly a woman [I'm a girl] and if they catch my gaze I see who can hold it without looking away first. Seems fun, you never know if they will smile or just simply look away. Many times they look away and I "won". LOL- but if I break my gaze, I always give them a quick smile.
Sorry God gave me two good eyes to see with. I'll stare until something gives.
haha! that's funny!
but unfortunately i have this problem as well >.< but it's getting better and i don't stare too much, unless i just can't help myself O_o;
often, many people stare at me, and i wonder to myself if somethings wrong with me, but i give a quick smile and look away
absolutely love it
i am so keeping my camera ready now
if folks who have a fixed gaze don't mind that i'm reading their mind, then their stare doesn't have any effect on how i'm centered with the universe.
Re: 'sex' on the San Bruno 9
How about pulling out your cell phone and tell 'em you'll take pictures and post 'em on the internet?
