Etiquette Rule #12: Exiting the Train

Gotta Bounce?
Observing the exit patterns of passengers makes us long for the days of grade school fire drills, when little Johnny and Susie knew how to get out to the playground in calm, orderly, and single file fashion. With transit numbers on the rise, it’s time to conjure up those childhood lessons and put them to good use. As with any effective evacuation exercise, you should know your escape route beforehand. So, when disembarking a train or bus plan ahead and slowly make your way to the nearest door over the course of preceding stops. If you happen to be sandwiched in the back, this technique will minimize the last minute panic and shoving that ensues when you realize how quickly the doors close. If you are already positioned near the door, keep your cool. No one likes pushy door hoverers, so don’t expect to win any popularity contests when a fellow passenger states the obvious ‘I’m getting off too’! Not planning to depart but insist on being a door squatter? Set a good example and step outside to let others through, but be sure everyone is off before
re-boarding. And, as we Muni Ladies like to say, practice makes perfect and permanent!

Muni Manner: Anticipate your stop to calmly exit the train or make way for others to do so. It’s the safe and courteous thing to do.

Think you should also mention that if you are going to eat your food on the muni, don't leave your eaten food on the seat, when you leave, this was disgusting.

My GOD! I'm so glad I stumbled upon the gem of a blog! This should be mandatory reading for anyone venturing out in public.

After an hour Muni ride it's hard not to come away feeling a little molested and in desperate need of a bath with some serious scrubbing.

I just love watching people who freak out when the door doesn't automatically open for them at their stop. What's even funnier is when the entire bus yells "Step Down!" to the poor guy/gal.

I really hate it when people try to barge in th very *MINUTE* the train or bus doors open, not caring to realize that someone *MIGHT* be getting off. I have no problem pushing past just these kinds of MUNI riders, too! Trust me, they usually get the hint!

I had someone try to get off the bus the same time I was, and she was trying to PUSH me aside so she could get off the bus first!! She got my elbow in her face and a shove back. What's wrong with people?????????

I was in Oakland a few days ago, and I noticed that some of the buses have two rear exit doors: one where you'd expect it to be and the other all the way at the back. I thought, "that's what Muni needs." That way people stuck at the back of a jam-packed bus won't have to shove through a dozen people (and their bags) to exit.

On Friday 8/8/08 I attempted to exit a 28 at Judah and was confronted by about 35 Asians, most with wheeled carts who wanted to board the rear door of the bus (not legal) and would not allow us to exit until we started screaming at them. Fare evaders and cheaters, the lot of them. Terrible manners too.

I always love it when everyone yells "Step Down!", but you're on a bus where you have to push the bar.

When people have a stop request and they use the cord, it's helpful if people "push down" on the stop request cord, instead of "pulling out." A month ago, I got hit in the eye by the cord, last night I was bonked on the head. Down, not out.
