Etiquette Rule #8: Properly Stow your Bags

Going Toe-to-toe with the Tote
We all carry around a little baggage, so the next time you take public transportation be mindful of your fellow passengers and how you toss those bags around. Space is at a premium and during sandwiched rush hour peaks the last thing we want is a ram in the back or a jab in the side. If you are one of the many standing straphangers or pole holders, place your bag between your legs to avoid said infractions. Whether you are Mr. Corporate America with your briefcase and gym bag or a member of the tweener backpack team with packs full of learning, we support your endeavors. But, are we also required to endure your shoves? For the shoppers in the bunch (yes, you Ms. Fashionista with the latest oversized handbag): rather than take up twice the room, just slide that bag down to your side. All the better to keep an eye on your precious goods. Who knows, if airlines have started charging for checked bags, it’s not a given that your transit system won’t. By strategically placing or carrying your bag beside the lower half of your body, we are all now free to move about the cabin.

Muni Manner: Help save space and avoid jostling others by properly stowing your bags. It’s the safe and courteous thing to do.

What about those yoga mats that are sticking out of people's bags. They always boink me in the head!

The 30 Stockton is horrible!!
90% of the boarding passengers break all the rules so to get off the bus, you have to yell, push people who will not move, and then be thankful when you are off the bus. I feel sorry for the bus drivers and the passengers who do have manners. You'll lose them on this line for sure.

Yes god, any bus that goes through a school, every little punk has to wear their backpacks taking up double the space! When i was that young it was common sense to take it off to save space, damn.

Please If you carry a backpack, please take it off!! you count for two and you always bump everyone.
commonsense people!!!!

Hey, I just saw your website on the CBS news! Nice website here! I don't ride MUNI, but I agree with those rules cause I sometimes ride the VTA!

I agree! I ride the N every day during commute hours and always stand and it drives me crazy when I have been standing in the same spot for quite some time and someone gets on with a bag over his/her shoulder and stands right behind/next to me and hits me with the bag the rest of the ride! Erg!

Yeah, the 30 Stockton is the worst, especially after school. It's so bad that I just walk the route instead. First you gotta deal with the Marina kids and their backpacks. Then you got the Galileo kids and their backpacks. Then you get to Chinatown, and you get the little old ladies with a thousand grocery bags in each hand! Whenever I have bags and stuff, and I have to ride the bus and stand, I always put my stuff on the floor between my legs.

The 30 & 40 Muni Buses are the worst. I usually take a taxi to caltrain because the thought of getting on those buses in the morning is so repulsive. NO one moves, they refuse to use the back doors and most of the bus drivers have just given up. Not only won't they move but each bus smells worse then the other. The smell is a combination of bad breath and rotten chicken. I could go on and on about the gutteral noises and the nose picking but it is lunchtime and I don't want to vomit.
It feels good to get this out!!!

I have been knocked in the face quite a few times when I am sitting and someone is standing in front of me with a backpack. It is unbelievable that people do not realize how much space they are taking up! Put the bag down by your feet fools!

There are two hurdles to storing your bag on the floor. First, the floor is appallingly filthy. On a typical commute, there is a good chance that there will be sticky soda residue, spit (if not outright phlegm), sunflower seeds, urine, and/or god knows what else on the floor. Do you really want to set your bag/purse/yoga mat/backback in that?

One approach is the "Penguin Egg Maneuver" where you rest your bag on your feet and kinda cradle it between your legs (many penguins incubate their eggs by holding them with their feet, so that the eggs don't touch the freezing ground). The problem with that approach leads us to challenge #2:

When you do store a bag at your feet, people often don't see it and either get impatient at how long it takes for you to maneuver out of the way as they attempt to exit (or worse, bowl you over as you fall over your bag), or they trip on it as they try to move past you.

I typically wear/hold my bag(s) nowadays, and just try to be really conscious about where they are and position them as least annoyingly as possible.

YES! YES! YES! - And I'd like to add #8a - your freakin backpacks, briefcases, shopping bags, computers do not need a seat on MUNI or BART! Seats are for fare paying humans not bags!!!!! Put your stuff on the floor, Please! - Sorry MM ladies, I guess that's not good posting etiquette - but these riders who think their stuff is just as important as they are and proudly put it in the seat next to them, really tick me off!!!

This is a *HUGE* concern, but I don't have a problem with this. You know why? If I ask someone politely to let me by and they don't, I just push on through as if they're not there. And *THAT'S" how you do it, peeps! If they refuse to take the hint that you wanna get off, do like En Vogue said and "give em' something that they can feel"!!! LOL

New etiquette rule recommendation: seats are not for your large collection of pink plastic bags, nor are the seat backs, window sills and exmergency exit pulls for hanging these pink plastic bags. One fare equals one seat.

Next etiquette rule recommendation: pick one seat and stay in it. Popular Asian custom is to jump around to seats with better status. This started happening in 1973 when I ended up with a woman on my lap when I took an available single seat after standing. We rode the same route/time and she could not look at me for many months afterward.

There are some people do not remove there backpack from the back to front especially schools like Lowell, Mercy, and SFSU. These kids take the 18 bus in the morning and afternoon.
