Etiquette Rule #18: Carry Beverages with Care

This One's On Me
As age and busy lives catch up with us, it's no surprise that studies show 9 out of 10 of us need some liquid energy to get our mojo going for the day. Eager for a caffeine zinger first thing in the morning, commuters often get their wakey juice on the road--accounting for the rash of riders carrying beverages on mass transit. This has led to an epidemic of multi-taskers juggling to hold on for balance while slurping down beverages that are precariously positioned above seated passengers. This not only creates the danger of dripping on others (highly irritating) but also the hot drink hazard (highly litigious). Fellow riders, wake up and smell the coffee that's seeping out of your container and onto those around you! As a remedy, we suggest holding your drink away from others and investing in a handy commuter mug to effectively prevent spillage. For those who choose to stick to disposable coffee cups, we Muni Ladies offer this nugget of physics: if the plastic lid is placed with the sipper away from the seam in the cup, the seal will be air-tight and liquid is less likely to escape when tilted. No fuss, no muss? We'll drink to that!

Muni Manner: Secure lids on potables and position them away from other passengers. It's the safe and courteous thing to do.

I've got an even *better* idea: Don't bring the drinks on the train/bus in the first place!

I never understood the mentality behind bringing beverages -- especially hot ones -- on public transit.

Reading this blog makes me so very glad I don't have to deal with MUNI anymore...

Well I agree with the Anonymous comment, I think that are places for every thing and bringing beverages to transports it's against security. It's dangerous and not hygienic. Please people think a little beet before doing it.

Wait a minute...isn't it against Muni and BART regulations? "Eating and Drinking are prohibitied on all Muni vehicles." Oh wait, that is right. The RULES DON'T APPLY TO YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE TOO IMPORTANT FOR THE RULES. Maybe if the driver or fare cops actually handed out a ticket for it or you get personally sued, you would think twice.

it's fairly appalling that these two, who suppoesedly are tyring to encourage good behavior on public transit are openly encouraging a FLAGRANT BREAKING OF THE LAW, which is that it is ILLEGAL to eat or drink on Muni or BART.

And for good reason -- hot beverages, spilled crap on the seats and floor and fellow passengers, etc. not only is unsafe and unpleasant, but costs the operators mega-bucks to continue cleaning up. There's a reason those rules are there!

Of course, it is plenty legal (and encouraged!) to bring food (i.e. groceries in a grocery bag) on the bus, as that is an essential part of any transit-oriented and car-free existence. But sipping on your latte or chomping down on your burrito is a whole different story.

What's that you say? You'll be careful? Right....

Kind readers, we thank you for your comments above. We make the gentle reminder that our rules are read by riders on different transit systems around the world - some that allow drinks and some that don't. And, despite our awareness and deep respect for the laws around our own local systems of Muni and BART, we see riders with drinks every day on our commutes. Therefore, we only politely suggest that anyone with a drink on transit (lawful or not) carry it with care.

Smooth riding,
SF Muni Ladies
